Kusakabe Folk Museum

Kusakabe Folk Museum Takayama is a former merchants house with a distinct architectural style. Kusakabe Folk Museum is designated as a National Important Cultural Asset, began life as a house for a wealthy merchant. This house, which was owned by Kusakabe Family, was a typical common house in Japan in Edo period (1603-1868). Kusakabe Folk Museum, Takayama The Kusakabe family was a successful merchant who lent money to the public office. The original house was burned down in 1875 and the present one was rebuilt by a famous architect Jisuke Kawashiri in 1879, using the original architecture style. The Kusakabe house has many characteristics of Edo architecture : the main part of the building has two-stories and a stairwell, all made of Japanese Cypress (Hinoki); the combination of beams and pillars leads a strong construction: the roof slants slightly with moderate eaves; the window has several slender latticework (Koushi); it is finished with a dark-brown paint made from soot.
