Nagahama

Nagahama is a charming castle town, next to Lake Biwa and close to Kyoto, with many historical attractions including the reconstructed Nagahama Castle, the oldest train station in Japan and the famous Keiunkan Guest House. Nagahama was once ruled by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Keiunkan Guest House In 1886, Asami Matazo who was a successful business man in Nagahama, heard news that Emperor Meiji were arriving at Nagahama by ship on his way to Kyoto. He then decided to build a guesthouse for Emperor Meiji for this occasion. Keiunkan was completed in 1887 with its beautiful garden and the magnificent view of Lake Biwa and Mt Ibuki. Opening hours: 9:30am – 5pm, 7 days a week from Mar 24 to Nov 30 Admission: 200 yen Nagahama Railway Square Nagahama Railway Square is a railway museum which exhibits old Nagahama Station and the history of Nagahama Railway. Old Nagahama Station was built in 1882, which is the oldest existing railway station in Japan. Opening hours: 9:30am – 5pm, 7 days a week Admission: 300 yen Nagahama Castle History Museum Original Nagahama Castle was built in 1576 by the order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and he lived there for 7 years to rule Nagahama area. After several successors, Nagahama Castle was demolished in 1615 and the materials were used to build Hikone Castle. The current Nagahama Castle is a reconstruction of the original castle and opened as a history museum in 1983.
