Shiga

Shiga Prefecture is located to the North West of Kyoto. The capital of Shiga Prefecture is Otsu, but the prefecture is dominated by Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. Enryakuji Temple Enryakuji Temple is a World Heritage Site and a National Treasure, which overlooks Kyoto, but technically is in Shiga Prefecture. Hikone Castle Hikone Castle is one of the oldest intact Japanese Castles and is classified as an Important National Cultural Asset. Lake Biwa Lake Biwa is the largest lake in Japan, which is 670.25 sq km and 235km around. Lake Biwa is a major water supply to Kansai area. It is the 3rd oldest lake in the world (1st :Lake Baikal, 2nd :Lake Tanganyika). Lake Biwa has many different attractions spread around its shore line. Lake Biwa is a popular place for local people for water sports, swimming, cruise and fishing. Lake Biwa contains many species of fish, but it is especially famous for its ayu fish. Chikubushima Island Chikubushima Island is a small island on Lake Biwa which has 0.14 sq km and 2km around and is one of the ‘Biwako-Hakkei’ (8 most scenic spots of Lake Biwa). Chikubushima Island Three-Story Pagoda, Hogonji Temple, Chikubushima Island Nagahama Nagahama is a charming castle town, next to Lake Biwa, with many historical attractions including the reconstructed Nagahama Castle, the oldest train station in Japan and the famous Keiunkan Guest House.
