Osaka Tenmangu Shrine

Osaka Tenmangu Shrine hosts Osaka’s biggest festival Tenjin Matsuri.  Osaka Tenmangu Shrine was originally built in 949. Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is the most famous of all the many Tenjin/Tenmangu shrines throughout Japan. Originally built in 949, Osaka Tenmangu Shrine was destroyed by fire several times and the current shrine was built in 1845. It enshrines Michizane Sugawara who is a famous scholar and warrior as the principal deity. Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is called Tenjin-san fondly by Osaka people and hosts Osaka’s biggest festival ‘Tenjin Matsuri’ in July. It is one of the three greatest festivals of Japan and the world’s greatest boat festival. During the festival, traditional Japanese performing arts such as kagura music and bunraku puppets performances are performed in all parts of the city. The highlight of the festival is a parade both on land and river. Approx. 3000 people dressed in the imperial-court style marching beside portable shrines, and they board 100 boats near the Tenmabashi Bridge then sail upstream followed by fireworks.
