Nikko World Heritage Sites

Nikko World Heritage Sites: There are three sites in Nikko that together form the UNESCO World Heritage Listing known as the “Shrines and Temples of Nikko”. Nikko’s World Heritage Sites were inscripted in 1999 by UNESCO. They represent some of the best Nikko attractions. UNESCO described the listing as: “The shrines and temples of Nikko, together with their natural surroundings, have for centuries been a sacred site known for its architectural and decorative masterpieces. Picture: Shinmon (Sacred Gate) Futarasan Shrine Futarasan Shrine is one of the most significant Shinto shrines and dates back to 766AD. Futarasan Shrine is part of the World Heritage site at Nikko. Toshogu Shrine (Nikko), a World Heritage site, is famous for the sculptures of the Three Wise Monkeys and decorative gate. Rinnoji Temple is a complex of 15 Buddhist temple buildings in the city of Nikko. Rinnoji Temple, a World Heritage Site, is famous for its gold-leafed statues of Amida and Kannon. |
