Gangoji Temple

Gangoji Temple is a World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Great Temples of Nara. Gangoji Temple was established in 588 as part of Asuka-dera. Gangoji Temple was originally established in Asuka (the Japanese capital immediately prior to Nara, which was also located in Nara Prefecture). Gangoji Temple was then relocated to its current location in 718 after Nara became the capital of Japan. In 1998 Gangoji Temple was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site as part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara” listing. All the original buildings have been destroyed by fires with the worst being in the 15th and 19th centuries. The Gokurakubo hondo is the best preserved of all the building in the temple complex.
