Kanrantei Pavilion

Kanrantei Pavilion is the tea house which provides great views of Matsushima Bay, great tradition Japanese tea and features beautiful paintings on the walls and folding screens which are designated as Important Cultural Properties. Kanrantei Pavilion is the tea house which was originally built in Fushimi-Momoyama Castle in Kyoto by the order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Later, it was given to Date Masamune, who transferred it to Edo (Tokyo). When Date Tadamune succeeded the Date clan, he ordered the transfer of the tea house to Matsushima without a single change. As you can see now, Kanrantei is the best spot to enjoy the magnificent view of Matsushima while having a traditional Japanese tea. The paintings on the walls and folding screens are designated as important cultural properties, and the building is designated a Prefectural Cultural Property. Being raised on this headland is what gives Kanrantei Pavilion such great views, but this raised position has also helped protect Kanrantei Pavilion from tsunami including the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and resulting tsunami.
