Higashi Chaya District

Higashi Chaya District is the biggest of the four chaya (Geisha) districts in Kanazawa. Kanazawa is second only to Kyoto for active Geisha. Higashi Chaya District (East Geisha District) is the biggest of the four chaya (Geisha) districts in Kanazawa. Chaya is a traditional place where Geisha have entertained people by dance and music since the 17th century. Kanazawa is the second biggest existing Geisha city after Kyoto. Geisha House Higashi Chaya District Kanazawa A Geisha house is characterized with a beautiful lattice called “kimusuko” on the outer side of the first floor and guestrooms located on the second floor. Some of the old houses here have been renovated into restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops but others are still existing Geisha houses. Higashi Chaya District is designated as National Cultural Assets.
