HimejiHimeji (姫路市; -shi) is a small city located in Hyogo Prefecture, at the western edge of the Kansai region of Japan. As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 480,404 and the density of 1,742.55 persons per km². The total area is 275.69 km². The city was founded on April 1, 1889. Getting to Himeji by train Himeji is along the Sanyo shinkansen line from Osaka and Kobe to Okayama and Hiroshima. The Hikari Rail Star offers frequent service to Himeji, as do the all-stopping Kodama trains. Also, one Hikari train each hour departs from Tokyo station and stops at Himeji en route to Okayama. If you do not have a Japan Rail Pass, a cheaper method of reaching Himeji from within the Kansai region is to take one of the frequent commuter expresses (新快速 shinkaisoku), which charges only the price of a local train . The ride takes 40 minutes from Kobe or one hour from Osaka. Himeji Castle Himeji CastleHimeji Castle (姫路城 Himeji-jō). Dating to 1609 and also graced with the name “White Egret Castle” (白鷺城 Shirasagi-jō), this striking white edifice is generally considered the most beautiful of Japan’s castles and is one of the few that has escaped the ravages of civil war, earthquakes and firebombings.
