Hakata

Hakata is a major part of central Fukuoka. Japanese often refer to Fukuoka as Hakata. Hakata has several key features including Hakata Station and Canal City Hakata. Historically Hakata and Fukuoka were two separate cities divided by the central river, but as the size of the two cities grew they were joined into the one, Fukuoka city. Hakata-ku is now merely one ward of Fukuoka city. Fukuoka really has two centres of activity; Hakata and Tenjin. Most Japanese refer to Fukuoka as Hakata and given the main Japan Railways station is located in Hakata (JR Hakata Station) this is understandable. Hakata Station Hakata Station (博多駅, Hakata-eki) is the main railway terminal of the city of Fukuoka, Japan. It is the largest and busiest station on the island of Kyushu. Hakata Station is a gateway to other cities in Kyushu for travellers from Honshu. The Sanyō Shinkansen from Osaka ends at Hakata Station.
