Atami

Atami is a beach and Onsen resort town 100Km from Tokyo and not far from Hakone. Atami’s Onsen have been famous since the 5th century. Atami, literally means ‘hot ocean’, is a coastal Onsen (hot spring) resort town located in Shizuoka Prefecture. Discovered in 5th century, it is one of the three great Onsen in Japan. In 1600’s, Tokugawa Ieyasu visited Atami. Since then Atami became a favourite Onsen of Tokugawa shogun during Edo period (1603-1868). In Meiji period (1868-1912), many famous novelists visited here and wrote their masterpieces. Among them, Ozaki Koyo’s ‘Konjiki Yasha (Golden Demon)’ is the best known novel, a tragic love story of Kan-ichi and Omiya. It was first published on a newspaper, followed by films and TV dramas later on. In 1960’s, Atami was the most popular destination for honeymooners. Ieyasu no Yu (Ieyasu’s Hot Spring) Named after the famous shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, this is a public food spa in front of JR Atami Station. Atami Sun Beach 100km from Tokyo, you can enjoy this clear water beach here in Atami. Omiya no Matsu (Omiya’s Pine Tree) The most famous scene of ‘Konjiki Yasha (Golden Demon)’ is that Kanichi and Omiya meet here in front of this pine tree before they separate. Atami Castle Atami Castle stands 120 meters above sea level, where you can overlook the view of Atami Bay. It was built in 1959 as a tourist attraction. Open hours: 9am – 5pm Admission: 900 yen Marine Spa Atami If you stay overnight at Atami, your will have Onsen in you accommodation. However, if you come to Atami for a day trip, Marine Spa Atami is the place you can enjoy Onsen as well as a water slide. You can enjoy the ocean view from its bath room. Many shops sell dried fish.
