Katsushikaku

Katsushika (葛飾区; ku) is one of Tokyo’s special wards located in northeast Tokyo, Japan. It is known in Japanese popular culture as the locale of both the world’s longest-running film series, the Otoko wa tsurai yo series starring Kiyoshi Atsumi as Tora-san, and the world’s longest-running manga series, Kochikame. Katsushikaku Temples and Shrines Shibamata TaikyakutenShibamata Taikyakuten, located in Shibamata, is a temple of Nichiren Buddism. It is formally called Kyoeizan Daikyoji Temple, but much more commonly known as mentioned above. The temple is crowded with people on New Year and other festival days. It is used to film a famous Japanese film Otoko wa Tsurai yo (It’s tough being a man). Katsushikaku Parks Metropolitan Mizumoto ParkMizumoto Park is the largest park in Tokyo. There are various plants growing within the park. It is crowded with people who enjoy their leisure time all year round, especially in the seasons of cherry blossoms and Japanese iris. Horikiri Shobu EnHorikiri Shobu En, located in 2-19-1 Horikiri, is a park where there are Japanese irises planted. It is under jurisdiction of Katsushika Ward. The park stretches along Ayase River, which is 10-minute-walk distance from and south-east of Horikiri Shobu En Station on Keisei Mainline. There are 200 types of 6,000 irises in the park. The best season to view the flowers is the middle of June. The admission is free. The park usually opens from 9am to 5pm, and from 8am to 6pm during Katsushika Iris Festival (from the beginning of June to around 20 June). There are stands around the park during the festival period. Within the site, there is a multipurpose facility Seikan Tei which offers a place to eat. Katsushikaku Halls and Cultural Facilities Katsushika City MuseumKatsushika City Museum is located in Shiratori. Since it opened in July 1991, Katsushika Ward has run the museum. It consists of 4 genres: history, folklore, archeology and astronomy. There are exhibition rooms for local culture and astronomy, a planetarium, an astronomic observatory, a solar telescope and a spectroscope room in the museum.
